Hi all. I have an ASRock z68 extreme3 Gen3 i5 system (see sig). A couple of weeks ago, the front panel USB connectors suddenly died, and do not show up in windows device manager. This followed plugging in a cheap mp3 player that my son won at school. I'm able to live with that. But then suddenly today, out of the blue, my Realtek audio suddenly sounds like it's underwater: very garbled, almost an echo sound. Horrible sound. I have deleted the drivers and let Windows reinstall, rolled back the drivers, used Windows drivers, updated the drivers, no change. My speakers are fine, as I get the same sound through headphones. Windows tells me that my audio devices are working properly. My guess is that this might be the on-board audio controller. The audio had been working perfectly for two months. No problems. I've made no changes to hardware, no new drivers, nothing changed, no tweaks to the bios. I just started it up this morning and it was totally garbled for all sound.

I am open to any suggestions as to how to resolve this. But I am thinking that the mobo may be faulty, and I will need to RMA it back to ASRock.

Thanks.

I have an older PC system that I gave to my partner. The system was built probably in 2010 (can't remember exactly, :o.) The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3P, PSU is an Enermax Liberty 620W. It has been working fine since it was built.

Earlier this week she started it up, all the fans came on, and then it abruptly shut down after about 10-20 seconds, restarted, shut down again, etc. No beep codes, not long enough to get to the BIOS screen, let alone to the boot screen. We had had a power outage a few days previously so I immediately thought it must be a power problem. I did all the simple things such as making sure the power cord was fully plugged in, checked the UPS, changed outlets, etc. This made no difference. I tested the voltage of the PSU (24 pin connector and 4 pin 12-V connector) with a multimeter, everything tested out fine. I checked all of the internal cable connections, reseated the memory, still had the same continuous start up/shut down cycle problem.

The system had four sticks of Mushkin XP2-8500 1 GB memory. I removed all but one of the sticks and, voila, system booted up. The motherboard is supposed to be dual channel, but won't start up with 4 sticks, won't start up if there is a stick in slot 1/3 or 2/4 as required for dual channel use. I can put memory in slots 1 & 2 and the system starts up fine, shows 2064 MB of RAM in BIOS. I can't remember the other combos I tried but as far as I can tell, all four sticks are good....

So, is the motherboard on its way out? Could memory slots 3 & 4 have fried somehow without causing any more damage to the mobo? Anything else I should be checking?

Puzzled in Colorado...

Thanks for any assistance!

Holly

So when running a single dvi display to the radeon 4850 with the latest catalyst 12.4 windows 7 x64 the game starts and I can play it without a problem.

When starting the game with dual displays 1 dvi and 1 dvi to vga, the screen goes black as soon as I enter the game and the computer crashes to bios post. With catalyst 12.4 it doesn't even show the first screen of the game starting and it crashes to bios post screen. So I uninstalled 12.4 and threw on catalyst 11.12. It would then at least show the Ubisoft screen for a half a second then crashes to bios post screen.

Maybe it's the AMD Vision Center? I'm trying to find the latest catalyst with the old Catalyst Control Center. I bet if I install only the driver and don't install CCC or the Vision Center it'll go right into the game without a problem. I tell you ATI has way way way more issues than Nvidia cards do. I have a spare GTX 280 laying around but don't have a 8 pin to molex and my power supply only has 6 pin plugs.

So how would you guy's suggest I fix this?

I ran Driver Cleaner .net first and the problem presists.

I am looking at upgrading my motherboard and CPU. I am looking at the Intel Core i7-3820 for the LGA 2011 socket.

So the question is motherboards, and I decided that I want a good one.

I just found the ASRock Fatal1ty X-79 'Champion' on E-Bay, but I can't find it on NewEgg yet:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ASRock-Fatal...ht_8475wt_1396

How does it compare to the Asus Rampage IV Extreme?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131802

Looks like similar specs, but I think I can get the Fatal1ty X79 Champion for much less.
Any opinions?

My girlfriends computer keeps shutting down...
It only seems to shut off when she is playing Star Wars the Old Republic.

I have replaced the Ram thinking maybe that was the problem, also replaced the power supply.

But it still shuts down without warning, just like you unplug it... the funny thing is when you reboot the computer it doesn't come to the shut down improperly screen.

Anyone have any clue what might be going on?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, just joined the forums and I have a question.

I'm looking to update my video card and processor in my computer (built it myself about 6-7 years ago) but I don't know how I should go about it. I've gotten away from how everything has progressed since I built this desktop and I'm having trouble figuring out what I can update it to without getting overly expensive.

I wanted to get a decent video card for around $150 and was thinking of getting http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161337 this one. Don't know how much better that will be than what I currently have though.

I also, as aforementioned, want to update my processor, but I don't even know where to begin on that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Here's my current system specs. If you need more let me know:

I have 3 Radeon HD video cards. Going to sell 2 of them, the 3rd ends up in a system I'm putting together for one of my grandsons.

The cards are a Powercolor HD6790 1Gb (4 months old), a Sapphire HD6850 1Gb (15 months old) and an MSI Twin Frozr II HD6950 2Gb 13 months old

Asking $90 for the 6790, $100 or BO for the 6850 and $150/BO for the 6950. Price includes shipping. I have the box for the 6950. The 6790 and 6850 require 1 PCIe 6-pin power connector, the 6950 has 2.
A 500 watt minimum power supply is suggested for all 3.

I accept PayPal and if you are anywhere from Milford to Nashua/Manchester to Portsmouth NH I can meet you as my job has me all over southern NH.
The MSI 6950 Twin Frozr II goes for $245-$300 new online at e-tailers like SuperBiz and on eBay.
